Regardless of whether you are at a national park, beach, or your own backyard, spending time outdoors can lower blood pressure, improve your mood, reduce stress, and slow your heart rate. All of this and other aspects of being in nature also contribute to a stronger immune system. When children in particular get up and away from computer screens they experience less stress, use their imagination more, get moving, experience reduced stress and fatigue, and are able to focus their attention better.

Living near nature can actually help you live longer. A study was done by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The study was a nationwide investigation into risk factors for major chronic diseases in women. It examined more than 108,000 women from 2000 to 2008.  The researchers compared the risk of death with the amount of plant life and vegetation near the women’s homes and found that women living in the greenest areas had a 12% lower death rate than women living in the least green areas.  Specifically, women in greener areas had a 41% lower death rate for kidney disease, a 34% lower death rate for respiratory disease, and a 13% lower death rate for cancer than those living in areas with less greenery.

It’s our nature to want to spend time outdoors. At 100 Year Lifestyle we have always encouraged people to get up, get out, soak in the sun to get your vitamin D, and just enjoy being outside. But our connection to nature runs deeper. If you aren’t spending enough time in nature, you aren’t maximizing your 100:100, living at 100% for 100 years…or more.

According to Paul Amato, PhD, a sociologist who studies parent-child relationships at Pennsylvania State University, “Fathers and mothers are children’s most important teachers. Fathers might ask themselves, what are my children learning — about life in general, about morality, about how family members should treat one another, about relationships — from observing me every day?”

While there are a variety of studies that all look at the importance of fathers from different perspectives and under different situations, they all unequivocally state that a father’s active participation is always preferred, and that quality of time is more important than quantity. Beyond these mechanics, the studies suggest that “legitimately care for your children and modeling good behavior” is most important.  Perhaps most importantly, dads need to realize that their kids are always watching, and that what they do matters.

The reality is that dad’s have a tremendous impact on the choices their children make.  It’s called the “father effect.” While motherhood tends to take the lead in parenting studies, according to Fatherly.com, kids who have close relationships with their fathers do better in school and life. They avoid high-risk behaviors and tend to have healthy, stable relationships when they grow up.

In order to get those creative juices flowing, you need to have a positive attitude. Negativity blocks out possibilities, which hinders creativity. Living at 100:100 helps you create and maintain a positive attitude. First, you are living a lifestyle that creates health, meaning you are adding years to your life and life to your years.   Without motivation and determination, there is no creativity, and there is no 100 Year Lifestyle. It’s one thing to imagine new ways of doing things or seeing new creations in your minds’ eye. It’s another thing to bring those creations, those new situations to life. In order to be meaningful, creativity needs to be manifested, to exist outside the mind or imagination. Living your 100:00 requires motivation and determination. You need to not only understand the changes that will bring you health, but you need to make them happen. You not only need to understand the relationships or activities that will bring you joy, you need to pursue them. Luckily, The 100 Year Lifestyle offers the best possible motivation—health and longevity for you and your loved ones!

So, just what is a sedentary lifestyle? The Sedentary Behavior Research Network defines sedentary behavior as any time a person is sitting or lying down. Think of the hours you spend driving a car, at the computer, eating, and watching TV. If you accumulate six or more hours of sedentary activities during the course of a day, without getting the recommended amount of physical exercise, you are leading a sedentary lifestyle.
